Goldtree (S.L.) Limited: Pioneering Palm Oil in Sierra Leone
Goldtree (SL) Limited, under Planting Naturals, located near Daru in Sierra Leone’s Kailahun District, stands as a key player in the West African palm oil sector. With one of the region’s largest organic plantations and a state-of-the-art mill, Goldtree produces certified organic crude palm oil that supports both commercial growth and sustainability.
Sierra Leone’s tropical climate is ideal for oil palm cultivation. However, like many emerging markets, the country’s palm oil supply chain has traditionally faced operational inefficiencies, limited traceability, and manual recordkeeping that hinder scalability and trust.
To address these challenges, Goldtree (SL) Limited partnered with Softweb Technologies to implement BlueEye—a smart digital platform tailored for the palm oil industry.
Key Challenges in Palm Oil in Sierra Leone
Despite the region’s agricultural potential, operational bottlenecks affected productivity and profitability. Goldtree (SL) Limited identified several critical gaps in the traditional workflow:
1. Inefficient Attendance and Record Management
Manual attendance systems at fruit collection centers resulted in inaccuracies and payment delays, reducing grower accountability and stakeholder trust.
2. Lack of Quality-Centric Data Systems
Without standardized digital metrics, consistent fruit grading was impossible. This weakened pricing transparency and eroded confidence in the value chain.
3. Disorganized Logistics and High Spoilage Rates
Transport assets—drivers and vehicles—were poorly coordinated. Delays and inefficient routing led to increased spoilage and higher operational costs.
4. Limited End-to-End Traceability
Buyers lacked visibility into the production journey. This hindered access to ethically sourced markets and diminished brand reputation.
Introducing BlueEye in the Palm Oil Industry
To overcome these structural challenges, Softweb Technologies introduced BlueEye—an app based attendance solution for plantation industry. Using high-end Facial Recognition Technology, 100% authentic attendance data is captured. Apart from attendance data, Blueeye also captures other productivity linked data seamlessly from wireless or Bluetooth enabled digital weighing scales automatically. to deliver a robust, scalable management system across the palm oil value chain.
Facial Recognition for Attendance and Productivity
At the heart of the BlueEye system is an AI-powered facial recognition system. Field workers use this to record attendance and harvest data, eliminating manual logging and minimizing fraud.
Benefits:
- Tamper-proof identification of plantation workers
- Accurate wage disbursement and productivity monitoring
- Real-time visibility into labor metrics and harvest performance
This ensures that grower records are accurate, transparent, and instantly available—creating a foundation for fair payment and traceable sourcing.
1. Grower Registration & Harvest Logging
Field agents log fruit bunch submissions using a mobile app. Each submission gets a unique QR code linked to:
- Grower ID
- Geolocation
- Date and time of delivery
2. Transport Logistics and Load Tracking
Harvests are mapped to registered vehicles. QR-coded consignments carry metadata such as:
- Total FFB weight
- Vehicle and route details
- Driver credentials
This information is directly integrated into the Palm plantation ERP system for real-time monitoring.
3. Mill Processing and Batch Identification
At the mill, QR codes are generated for each processed batch, capturing:
- Processing date
- Source village and contributing growers
- Type and quality of product (CPO/PKO)
4. Consumer Transparency and Feedback
Final packaged products feature scannable QR codes that offer:
- Full “farm-to-fork” traceability
- Origin and sustainability data
- Optional consumer feedback collection
This transparency builds trust and meets the demands of ethically conscious buyers.
Intelligent Operations: BlueEye Platform Capabilities
The BlueEye platform optimizes logistics, communication, and productivity through intelligent data flow:
Real-Time Resource Allocation
Field agents can assign vehicles and drivers via mobile in real time, reducing idle time and streamlining collection cycles.
Seamless Communication
Digital connectivity ensures synchronized communication between growers, transporters, mill operators, and buyers.
Enhanced Planning
Integrated dashboards offer predictive insights for better harvesting schedules, transport coordination, and mill throughput.

Building the Future of Palm Oil in Sierra Leone
The successful deployment of BlueEye in the palm oil industry represents a significant leap forward in transforming traditional agribusiness practices in West Africa. Goldtree’s digital shift has established a strong foundation for responsible growth, traceability, and stakeholder trust.
By harnessing intelligent software solutions, Sierra Leone’s palm oil producers can compete in global markets, ensure ethical sourcing, and uplift rural communities through fair and transparent practices.
What Goldtree said:
Goldtree is a leading 4,000-hectare organic palm oil estate and mill located in Eastern Sierra Leone, employing approximately 1,500 people. In addition to its own plantations, Goldtree operates a large-scale outgrower programme involving more than 8,000 local farmers, making the company a key driver of rural economic development in the region. As an organic and RSPO-certified producer, Goldtree operates without pesticides and adheres to the highest international standards for sustainable and responsible agriculture.
Prior to implementing the Blue-eye facial recognition system for time and attendance and HR payroll, Goldtree faced significant challenges in maintaining accurate control over attendance tracking and piece-rate salary calculations, creating material operational and financial risks.
The Softweb team was instrumental in the successful implementation of the system at our estate. As the first company in Sierra Leone to deploy this solution, additional development was required to adapt the system to local regulatory requirements. The system was fully customised to accommodate Goldtree’s specific payment structures and piece-rate calculation logic, resulting in a solution that fits our operations perfectly.
The Blueeye solution has been a true game changer, transforming Goldtree into a data-driven organisation with full control over its HR and payroll processes.
